Default Stage II - Do I need to dyno?

My bike is at the dealership for the winter. I took it in with 70 miles on it, had them do a stage II, and told them to just store it for me. So, I'm going to have it trailered down to Bike Week. I called the dealer and asked if I should try to get the break-in miles on it so they could do the dyno before I head to Florida. The service manager told me that with the M8's the dyno really doesn't accomplish much as it's pretty much dialed in when they do the upgrade. So I asked then just to confirm if it would be a waste of money to do the dyno, and he said, in his opinion, yes.

I would like some feedback from some of our resident tune-pro's if in fact that is the case.

Thanks,
Brad

I think that's pretty cool that your service guy recommended against something that would make them several hundred dollars. I don't think a dyno tune is needed. I assume you're using the SE tuner, and if so, the stage II map they use should be sufficient. I've heard that they can do a "smart tune" with the SE tuner, kind of like auto-tuning. If that's the case, they could accomplish that on the dyno, but it would just be fine-tuning things.

Yea, stage 1 & 2 are all harley parts including the tuner.

And thanks for the feedback.

Ride it with the canned map and see how she runs. If there are no flat spots or hesitation, no decel popping or an outrageous change in fuel economy, leave it alone.

I certainly do not want to be the one to **** on your parade, but considering the most recent problems Harley has been having with the EPA, did they really do ANYTHING to your bike to enhance performance? My understanding is that Harley agreed, amongst other things, to NOT do any modifications which enriched air/fuel. In other words, they will continue to run as lean as they came out of the factory. Perhaps this is the reason the dealer is suggesting that a dyno run would be a waste of money.

Actually most people have had the opposite problem with the canned maps. The bikes are running richer than optimum. Remember, lean bikes make power. Too lean is a problem, but lean is fast.

I did not know that. Seems counter-intuitive. Following an upgrade on the air cleaner and install of a Power Commander V, my '14 Ultra gained a 5% increase in torque and 10% increase in HP. And it runs cooler. I certainly would not go back to stock settings.

Just curious, what was the build? What tuner did you replace the original with?

The dyno tune will be a smart tune on the dyno.If They charge more than $50.00 for that, then You can buy the cables and smart tune Yourself. They cannot make any AFR adjustments with a street tuner.
