Sunday Ride on Long Island
Wow, what a nice day for a local ride on Long Island. The weather was perfect, warm but not too hot, with hardly a cloud in the sky. [sm=shades.gif]
I met up with local NYC/Long Island HDF members Rogue13 (LI), NYNicket (NYC), and Inforit (LI), for the first time yesterday and we had a great ride with a few stops along the way. Also on the ride was kjriv (LI), (who I had already met back in January) and Al (who isn’t a HDF member but he joined us on our ride anyway). One of the guys, either Rogue or kjriv, had met Al down at the old OBI parking lot a few weeks earlier. So when he came over to say hello to a familiar face he was the introduced to the rest of us and decided to join us for our ride.
NYNicket, Inforit, kjriv and I met at a popular local biker owned restaurant/bar on the south shore of LI called Jugs N Strokers at 10am. We shook hands, talked for a bit and then saddled up for the ride south to the old OBI parking lot for the Sunday morning car/bike show. For those of you who don’t know, OBI stands for Oak Beach Inn, which was a very popular night club here for many years but is now gone. It’s just a few miles east of the world famous Jones Beach and directly across the bay from Robert Moses State Park/Fire Island on Ocean Parkway on the southern edge of Nassau County, LI.
The four of us rode into the old OBI parking lot around 10:45am and looked for a place to park. It’s sometimes tough to park a group of bikes together down there because on a nice day the lot is usually packed, just as it was yesterday. We met up with Rogue13 who likes to get there early, real early on Sunday mornings. He was the first one there in fact, as he had been there since 5:45am. Like I said, he likes to be there really early. [sm=smiley2.gif]
We walked around for a while checking out the cars/bikes while kjriv was nursing a hangover. After a quick trip to the coffee truck for a quick caffeine rush for kjriv, we wandered over to find Rogue13 by his bike. We all made our introductions and were talking when Al walked up to say hi. We mentioned we were leaving soon to ride up to Port Jefferson and then over to East Northport to check out the East Northport FD bike show/swap meet. Al thought it sounded like a good idea so he joined us for the ride.
We left Rogue13 at the OBI parking lot, he declined our offer to join us, and headed north for a stop over in Port Jefferson. We parked our bikes on Main Street in downtown Port Jefferson, directly across from the Cross Sound Ferry (this ferry crosses the Long Island Sound between Port Jefferson, NY and Bridgeport, Connecticut). We hung out there just long enough for a quick visit to a local restaurant and an even quicker visit to a small motorcycle store across from the docks. A few minutes after leaving the motorcycle store we were back on the bikes headed east towards East Northport.
We took the most scenic road possible from Port Jefferson to East Northport riding west along Route 25A as it followed the twists, turns, hills and valleys of the north shore of LI. Once we got to the bike show/swap meet it didn’t take long to see everything there as it turned out to be a very small event. So rather then waste anymore time there we decided to hit the road and continue west to our final destination for the day.
