Default 1973 sportster rebuild

Can anyone help with swingarm installation. I want to make sure I have the pivot bolt and bearing spacers in correctly. I have the original service manual but it's a bit confusing.
thanks,

Thanks man, that link was exactly what I needed. I had it correct, but nice to see it in those pictures.

I'm installing all this stuff, swing arm, triple trees, sleeve nut and what not, where can I get the torque loads for these items. The service manual doesn't say.

Swingarm - How to tighten is in the second link that i posted.

Triple trees, sleeve nut and what not - have you installed new steering head bearings? If so the technique is to tighten the nut until it is too tight - until the steering will not easily flop back and forth. Then loosen it until it will just flop from center to either side with a gentle push.

Over tightening to start with is to ensure that the bearings are fully seated. Some guys use an 8" criteria - that is it will not flop over unless pushed from 4" off center. Be sure to re-check this after a few rides.

Got the fall a way for the front forks, thanks.

Check out what the book says for adjusting the swing arm.

Yes i am familiar with that and it is what i have done. I used a fish weigh scale that i bought from a sporting goods store.

Read thru the second link that i posted in #2 above. You will find there some opinions that this weigh scale thing may not be necessary. The guys posting there are all knowledgeable, have had these bikes since the 70s, have their own shop, and are highly respected. Hopper, fergerburger, EricFreeman, MoonWolf, perhaps others.

Default Swing arm

I tightened the pivot bolt with a breaker bar and still did not get any tension on the vertical movement of the swing arm. There is no side to side slop. Is it critical to have some bearing tightness? I don't remember how tight it was when I disassembled it.
