Default 75 ironhead gearing

I picked up my first bike and rebuilt it...This is my first time building a bike too. I have a 75 XLCH.. I am able to shift into first and neutral, but I cannot shift to any higher gearing. where should I start to solve this problem? Is it in the timing, or the shifter key? I don't know and need help...

Best place to start is with the correct clutch adjust procedure. Note that unlike other bikes, the IronHead clutch cannot be adjusted at the handlebar. You ned the factory service manual for this. But here is a link ...

IronHead Clutch Adjustment Procedure

See especially post #73 of the thread as it contains the very best version of the clutch adjustment procedure.

Let us know how this works out.

You need both of these. Easily available from any of local HD shop, indie motorcycle shop, J&P Cycles, eBay, etc ...

Factory Service Manual 99484-78
Factory Parts Catalog 99451-78B

I adjusted the clutch originally with the manual. Then I adjusted it again with the link u gave me. The problem still exists will not being able to shift out of first into higher gears, just first and neutral. What is the next step in solving this problem....hopefully...

I am not an expert on clutch and transmission, but i expect that you will have to pull those for cleaning, inspection and repair. Best to wait for a more expert opinion. You might try posting here ...

Could be the shifter forks. Best to take it out and examine it.
