Default Sportsters & Tall People

I haven't bought one yet but a guy is selling his '75 sportster. He upgraded to a newer TwinCam because he said the sportster bike as too small for him.

He is 6'-1" and I am 6'-4". Has any other tall peolpe had comfort issues with mid-seventies Ironheads??

I have a 75' Sportster and I am 6'1" and I don't think that the bike is to small. Besides what does he mean by small? I think that the seat height is what it's all about to be comfortable on a bike. Too low no good and too high is no good, at 500+ lbs it is not a small bike by any means.

By too small he must have meant too thin. The Sportster of 1975 sits as tall as any bike. There were some much later entry level priced Sportsters made to market to women. They had an extra low seating set up.
My 1971 sits high off the ground. My 2003 TWC-88 sits much lower and is a much fatter machine. Since I am a runt at 5-6, I find the Dyna to be the smaller bike for me. I like my ironhead better though........pg

I am 6'1" and my 67xlch is just right! I purchased the bike new and weighed just 170, now I am pushing 220. The photos taken then compared to present show that only I got wider.

I'm 6'4" and had a '77. What makes the sportster "small" is the mid controls. If you're tall and long-legged your knees will be up high. It helps if you put highway pegs up front. On my '77 I had highway pegs and apes, which helped a bit. Also, it is smaller physically than a big twin (hence the big in big twin). So if you're a big guy perched up there on a skinny sporty well...

When people see me, a 6'4" 220 pound dude (and I'm not overweight) straddling a sportser they kind of look twice.

I'll tell you what, though, regardless of the looks a pre-Evo Sporty that's spiced up a bit is a kick in the pants to ride. It's the purest riding experience you can get.

It's a fine bike for tall people. Just remember it wasn't built for thousand mile comfort rides. That takes a little fine tuning with accesories.

By the way I'm 6'0" and added forward controls about a month ago and they fit me great.

I think you are right 74_Ironhead. I do know someone who had a '75 Ironhead for sale. $2800 obo. I will see if he still has it and can talk him down some.
