Default speedo light is "lazy"

I have a '73 Ironhead that has a battery (12v, I think) and a generator. When I start the bike up at night, and turn on the lights, the speedo light doesn't come on until I've ridden down the road a bit. Might anyone be able to enlighten me as to the reason for this?

thanks,
Chris

Chris......
The problem may be a bad ground on that speedo light. This should push in tight enough to make a good ground contact and I bet yours does not.
And yes, the battery is a 12v................pg
