My favorite Sportster is an XLCH in years 1960 through 1962.
I believe these are the best models one could own.
I once rode a 1961 CH as a TT dirt track machine owned by my local Harley dealer. Very few bikes could run with that old beast.
I have a 1971 which I have owned for 37 years and I like it, but it is not the best model in my view. If it had the Fairbanks magneto then it may be more of a favorite.
If I had to pick a single year, I may pick 1974.
The main reason is because of the disc brakes.
It is still a right side shift, and that is what all Sportsters should be in my view.

I like flatheads, knuckles, pans, k's and old irons and shovels. If it kicks back, flips you over the bars, throws your kidneys to your mouth, busts your tail or slides to a stop when you think your going for second....I like it. A man measures up if he can tame a stallion. Once the starter button got moved from the foot to the finger men started to get soft.
I like the magneto on the old 'ch...it always gets you home.
