Default gas mileage

I keep runnning out of gas on my 84 ironhead. I was wondering how many miles do you get out of your bikes. I put on a 2.5 gal on mine and roughly get 80 miles per tank that is around town and highway Now I do have to check the speedometer to make sure that is ok But that seems not that much I have a superglide and that gets better gas mileage Thanks guys

I typically get about 43 MPG in my 1978. This is for warm weather, hiway riding. With cold weather n the winter, early spring and late fall i ride mainly in the city and mileage is considerably less, about 36 MPG.

i get a little over 100 miles with my 2 1/2 gall. tank, i can go a little farther but at 100 i had better be looking for a gas station, my reserve is good only for about 10 miles at best that puts me around 44 mpg, it was better i just did a mild "build" of my ride so it hurt the mileage somewhat

Alot of it depends on your gearing....With my '77 running the stock 21 tooth front sprocket, I get in the low to mid 40's. If I use a 22 tooth sprocket a I get a few miles per gallon more. If I use a 20 tooth sprocket, I get a few miles less.

My standard 2.2 gal tank will run me 75 miles out on the highway. At that point I am seriously looking for a gas station.
That makes the mileage somewhere in the neighborhood of 36 mpg.
The best measured mileage I ever got on this bike was 47 mpg riding it around town at under 35 mph.

Depends how i ride and how much noise i wanna make. haha, but i'm gettin at best 45mpg outta mine, i run high test all the time, nothing less. its just a 1981 1000cc sportster with drag pipes and a peanut tank (just over 2 gallon?) about 80 miles on the odometer i'm lookin for a petro station too. (actually thinkin bout puttin a fat bob tank on it or a newer sporty tank)

questions (not trying to hi-jack the thread..) whys come we consume more gas due to colder weather? I figured it'd actually improve fuel mileage?

I think it is because the gas molecules expand when they are hot and contract when colder.
This means the fuel/air mixture is more condensed in the winter and is in affect a richer mixture than the same mixture in the summer.
That is my understanding of it, although I may be wrong about that.

P.S.: The refineries also use a different mix in the winter than in the summer. That also must have an affect on mileage.

I can squeeze about 100 miles out of one tank on the highway on my '83 (23/49 sprockets), but I usually don't press it that far. My butt gets worse mileage - I like to stop after about an hour on the seat...

I am going to check the sprockets and see what I have I ran out of gas completely I put on 60 miles on her and hit reserve and another 25miles. When I checked the tank at 60 miles she seemd still full . I do have a pingel petcock on the tank. I thought that maybe the tubes in the petcock were higer then the stock one . I guess now I will be filling up alot sooner I just have a hard time understanding when I switch bikes that my superglide has a bigger tank and that means less stops thanks
