That might be my problem I did not put the pump screw in before I started to play with the air mixture

My understanding is that any pipes larger than the stock 1,3/4" are for looks only, and will result in a performance decrease. I do not recall hearing of any modifications that will correct this loss.

Also, that drag pipes are great at high RPM but will have a performance loss at low RPM; and that this loss can be at least partially corrected by lollipop [bolt&washer] baffles or other baffles.

I do not know what is the optimum length for the drag pipes. Ask around a lot before you cut. Do not accept the opinion of just one person, unless you know that that person is expert, not just opinionated.

Glider - in case you haven't found this link yet, have a go:

http://www.bikernet.com/SandS/PageVi...sp?PageID=1198

That's a quick crash course in S&S tuning, and comes with handy pictures so you know what you are getting your hands into. You should be able to set yourself back to stock easily enough with that, and then tweak as necessary.

Just for reference, that accel. pump screw can come out pretty far before it responds accordingly. I think mine is out around 3 full turns right now, maybe more.

Once you think you have a good handle on the idle mixture, you can tinker more with the accel. pump. This pump's purpose is to provide more immediate fuel response when you are trying to accelerate - so, if your engine is lagging on the throttle, you may need to open the the pump a bit more so it will respond the way you want it. The more you open it, the more gasoline you should expect to burn off, remember.

Good luck. S&S carb is simple enough to tune. If it's clean, and has properly sized jets in it, you'll be able to figure it out after tinkering with it for a while.

I m running an S&S super e. Air mix screw should be 1 1/2 turns out from gently seated. Go another 1/4 to 1/2 a turn with the baffles.

Dragpipes are made for drag racing not for street bikes, so why people use them ? there isn't any other aftermarket option for ironheads.
Dragpipes gives good performance over 4500rpm BUT hands up !!! who is driving all time bike +4500 rpm ....
With dragpipes performance is POOR under that rpm and it makes carb adjusting very tricky or impossible. 1 3/4" pipes are best size but without any baffler they are I.M.O. crap...
2" primarys are needed over 96" engines with over 2" exhaust ports and that isn't "easy" with ironhead
