Been using my Gerbings jacket liner on my Ironhead for a few years with no problems keeping the battery charged.

If you bypass ( connect field coil directly to ground) regulator generator will produce 15-19 Amps, as said it isn't lasting long before meltdown...
How I now it... better don't ask how it happened :-) OK I was testing one "broken" generator and noticed that there is 2 differend kind of field coils. Other was producing 14 amps @ 2700rpm before saturation. Other was outputting 20 amps @ 2600rpm before armature decided that this is enough. As halmc wrote soldering start melting -> one coil end brake loose and penetrate between brush and brush holder -> holder brake loose and fly between poleshoe and armature -> generator became totaled
