Forward controls of doom
My forward controls are at a funny angle, and based on the throw of my shifter, which after I shortened by two and one half inches and tapped for a screen on ball joint, is vertical but the push rod has too much play and i have to do this crazy up and back thing with my whole foot instead of just clicking up. Should I try messing with the rod, or do I need to purchase/ fabricate new mounts that rotate the forward controls down more? Pics to come.

Here are a couple of pics of the shifter side of my fwd ctls. Not the same as yours but ...
At the footrest end, the peg must be actually touching your boot with your boot on the footrest, in your normal riding position. I am going to drill a new hole for the peg about 1/2" lower than in the pic, so that i have better contact between my boot and the peg. As it is now i have to move my foot forward a small amount to shift.
At the primary cover end, some f ctls will be up and some down; mine are down. In either case it is very important that the lever move into a circle and not out of it - the center of the circle being the shift shaft. This will ensure better shifting, and also less pressure on the shift shaft so less probability of a leak at the oil seal there. Usually this means that, like in my pic, the lever is close to straight up&down when at rest, but slightly toward the back.
I trashed the shift arm that came with mine and used a stock shift arm, drilled and cut off, so i would have the knurles to keep it from slipping.

Kraft Tech forward controls. Available from
KC International http://www.kcint.zoovy.com/
or
KCINT on eBay.
These are IMO the very best forward controls for IronHeads, at a very reasonable price - less than $200. They have then for 1957 to 1974, and for 1977, 1978.

Here are pics of how i set up my 1980 to use forward controls for 1986 to 2003. I bought the kit on eBay and modified it to suit. Basically, i drilled 1" diameter holes in the lower front engine mounts, and re-inforced them by including very large washers in the installation. You can see the washer in the second pic. I have more pics of the process if you are interested i will post them.

Mick, I'd like to see more pictures of the installation process of the forwards on your 1980 bike. Please post whatever you have. They look just like what I want on my project--nice and clean, and the foot pegs are placed just where I want mine.
Do you happen to have the measurement of the distance from the engine mounts to where the shifter and brake rods attach to the shifter and brake levers? I've got a '69 XLH with the right-side shift, I'm wondering how well the forward shift lever will line up with the stock shift lever. I plan on whacking off the stock lever and using it with the forwards, like you did on the other bike pictured in this thread.
Thanks,
Mitch
