i think that is all you are going to get,no room for a bigger sprocket on front, not sure if anyone makes a smaller one for the back

ShepDog is right. You won't do any better than the 24/48. Most of us around here run 23/51 and are happy with it. Are you certain of your sprocket teeth counts?

i bounce back and forth between the 22 and 23 front, have allways ran the 51 rear but have been wanting to try the 48 rear even with the 22 front mine goes down the highway just fine at 65, it will go alot faster but i dont like to push the old girl any harder than i have to!

You have to be slipping the clutch pretty good with that setup and really ******* it down low. 51/24 is 2.13 (23 is .22), 48/24 is 2.00. When I went for 23 to 24 I could really tell the difference.

You should put a 22 on there just to feel the power. It will be a blast.

Bought a new XLCH in 1970. all 1970 XLCHs came geared 19-51, all 1970 XLHs came geared 20-51,never could tell the differece when riding either. Back then,Sportsters were consdered to be "TT Specials", that meant "tavern to tavern". They were not really meant as long distance cruisers, thats what "big Twins" were for. I did have a friend that had a 1968 XLH (20-51) that he rode from Va. to Fla.and back at least 4 times that I know of with no ill effects. When I bored and stroked mine (77 cu.in.) I changed from a 19 to a 22 to keep the front wheel down, made it a little better on the highway. Can't imagine riding a 900-1000 cc stocker geared as high as yours.

for around town riding you would want a lower gearing, do try the 22 front does not cost very much to try it. you are geared real tall for stop and go riding, you have to find a balance between in town and highway riding the 22 or 23 and 51 if you keep the 48 drop to a 21 front

I have ridden nearly 40k miles using a 22T upfront. Most of it was interstate. I like it.
