But to be fair, you said the least, while actually answering the question
He said right at the start that the battery was not going flat
But why let that stop you using your favourite cut and paste

The shovelhead engine will not go in. Except with lots of $s, a cutting torch, etc. It is generally considered to be a bad idea to cut up an original ironhead frame - lots of already molested ones out there. Unmolested ones, especially the older ones, are getting rare, and can be sold if there is a frame number and title papers. It is better, cheaper, and safer to buy an aftermarket frame.
Get the Sportster and Vintage cataloga from J&P Cycles http://www.jpcycles.com/ They will send them to you free. Their prices will not be the lowest but they have a reputation for great service, and have a good technical support line. Buy from Sporty Specialties http://www.sportyspecialties.com/ whenever possible. The owner, Kirk, has been a Sportster supporter for many years. Get his catalog also.
There are several other sources for parts such as Jireh Cycles http://www.jirehcycles.com/ These companies typically have lower prices than J&P Cycles, but you should always check if they have the part in stock before placing an order.
eBay is an excellent source for parts. Get both an eBay and a PayPal account. I have used these services for more than 5 years, have made several dozen purchases, and have never had a problem. eBay sellers are great.
You will need both a parts catalog 99451-78B and a service manual 99484-78. You can get these from any of the above sources. On eBay you will find them at about $25 on CD or about $50 for original unused shrinkwrapped paper. The parts catalog is essential for identifying parts and getting the part numbers. It is useful to also have the Clymer and Haynes manuals.
All the best with your project!
