I have 84 ironhead bobber with a s&s e carb after the bike gets real hot the idle goes up .i checked the cables oiled her up and checked for binding everything looks good. changed the fuel line and re routed and added a clear filter . I thought that the gas tank can be heated from the motor causing the fuel to be getting hot maybe i am reaching any help thanks

check the intake manifold for air leaks. My ironhead does the same thing.

Idles too high when heated up: Yes, first check for intake and exhaust leaks. These will wreck havoc with any tuneup.

For exhaust leaks pour about 1/2 oz of oil into each spark plug hole and run the engine at idle. Watch for where the smoke comes from. Any that comes from other than the ends of the muffers is a leak that must be fixed, especially at the cylinder heads.

For intake leaks use a cylinder of propane. With the engine at idle, aim the nozzle [not lit!] spraying raw propane gas at the joins between the carb and the cylinder heads, and at the join between the carb and the A/C. If there is any change in engine RPM then you have a leak which must be fixed.

If no leaks then it is a carb tuneup problem. Probably the carb is set up too rich so that it runs well with a cold engine. What carb do you have? What jets are in it? How many turns out on the pilot screw?

Do you run the insulator block between the manifold and the carb ?

Now the for the exhaust leak are you talking about where the exhaust comes out from the head?

What do you mean about a insulator. The carb just attaches to the intake

I bought this bike about a year ago and new to the ironheads. Maybe I should just replace the intake and exhaust gaskets just to be safe then take it from there. I do have manual for the bike is there any unforseen problems that should i beware of ? On my 98 superglide I did the intake and I had about 42,000 miles on her when I did them and that was a pain in the a&& no room to work on it, but these ironhead I don't know. Thanks Charly

Yes. If it leaks there you can never get a good tune up. Also you can burn a hole in a piston.
