Thanks, I just put a slothead screwdriver on the end of a long socket extension and got it to hold. So I got everything out except the seal in the slider (see pics). Is there a trick to getting out the seal? I don't want to chew it up trying to get it out, especially if I can't find a replacement. After I get the seal out, I don't see why I can't chrome it. Just the bushing in there. I can see if I can seal off the ends before chroming or would the thickness of the chrome really make a difference in the size of the bushing? Other problems?
If you chrome the sliders you want the chrome shop to blank off the entire inside of the slider where no chrome or copper can get inside.
They should be able to do this with no problem.
As for removing the seal and reusing it, I don't think that is possible, but you could try. Get yourself a new pair of seals before you destroy the old ones though. You may have to go to a bearing supply house to find the seals. Take a fork with you and let them measure it............pg

Default Goning to test this

Hey guys, I have a 1973 XLH which is going to also be restored. I am also the original owner and have complied a lot of stock equipment to put on the bike. ( stock exhaust, seat, new tach, chrome wheels brake plate / drum hub), I also plan on chroming the 8" extended fork tubes and lowers as well, but I will have a specialist named Dragster stew here in Vegas do that part.

Thats what I will do. Block off the slider.
I was able to find seals in J&P Cycles so no problem there. I just really like the whole chrome front end look. Just like my '03 Screamin Eagle Deuce (CVO).

Will the DX metal prep or cleaner pose a problem with some bondo on the tank?

Thanks,
Ranjet

Who is your chrome guy in Vegas? We don't have one here in Havasu and I figured I'd have to go to Vegas or Henderson to find one.
Thanks,

Not at all. Do not use DX on aluminum though. There is another product for aluminum. It is made to treat steel and has no affect on body filler.............pg

Ranjet.........
Here is what I found in the attic, if you can use it. This is the Italian made tachometer that came on my 1971 XLCH.
The speedo I must have discarded long ago.
In anycase, the bezel should fit your speedo as the two instruments are identical.

You are on your own when it comes to removing the bezel. perhaps a piece of bicycle inner tube over it may make it easier to remove.
You can have the whole tach if you reimburse me for the postage.
Perhaps send me a PM with your mailing address.............pg

Default Chrome

A-1 Chroming in Henderson is good, I used USA Chrome in Los Angelos, but they were extremely slow. Pick up a copy of Thunder Press as there is a couple of good motorcycle parts chromers always listed in there.

If you are looking for a new tach, I picked one up off EBAY for $50 and there are usually a couple listed there. My old one is fine just fading a bit, so I will swap it out. I am really looking for a new speedometer to match, but I have not seen one yet.

I have a spare original sportster seat ($125 plus shipping) if your interetsed.

See Ya

I just looked at the bezel. It has a rolled lip and it isn't comming off without ruining it.
Too bad you don't have the speedo. Oh well. Thanks for the offer. How did you post the nice large pics?

Highrider
Looks like I will need a speedo also. The bezel is not coming off. I have my original Cobra Seat and it still is perfect!

The seals are in the J&P catalog. 2008 catalog page 750.

Thanks,
Ranjet

Ramjet........
Sorry I do not have the speedo any longer. The needle had broken off and I recently discarded it when cleaning up the storage junk about a month ago.

The pics I just normally shot with the camera and loaded into shutterbug.
What may make the pics larger than usual is the fact that I cropped each photo, and then saved it.
The size increase was not intentional, but when cropped, it wants to fill the pallet so to speak, and that must be the reason the image looks large. Cropping has this side benefit when you wish to show some detail and eliminate the extra background...........pg
