What could cause backfire?

I regapped the plugs to the higher setting. My manual says to gap them 38-43. They were at 38. Now they are at 43 and the problem seems to have gone away, although I have not had the chance to test it really really good. The backfire I'm talking about was coming from the exhaust. Thanks for the help. I'll post any new devolopments.
