Oil coming from breather tube

Oil coming from breather tube
My 77 XLH has oil blowing out of the breather tube. Alot of oil. It emptied the oil reservoir in about 2 minutes. Actually it was spraying oil out the tube. I'm thinking the oil scavenging return isn't working, but not sure. Has anyone seen this before.

RE: Oil coming from breather tube
I'm not sure what you mean by "loading up the base". The oil tank went from full to empty, and all the oil poured out of the crankcase that night. It didn't seem to be returning the oil to the tank. I don't think that's normal. I'm waiting for a manual at the local shop so I can check hose routing as well. If you could ex[plain what loading up the base means I would appreciate it.

RE: Oil coming from breather tube
There is a check valve on the oil pump (spring and ball in seat) that only allows the oil into the crankcase when there is pressure. If the bike sits for an extended period of time the oil will seep past this check valve. What you are describing (to the best of my understanding) would lead me to believe the ball did not seat and your oil drained from the tank into the case. Check it out, it is located behind the pressure sensor.

If oils not returning to the tank it’s the scavenger side of the oil pump. \\; If it was just the check valve it would not empty the whole tank. \\; It would just empty the crankcase and then work normally. \\; But check the simplest things first, which would be the check valve. \\; If that’s not the problem, then go into the oil pump.

sullylang.....
Read all about it. Five pages........pg
ps: Loading the base means oil drains down through the check valve.

RE: Oil coming from breather tube
sullylang,i have an hd \\; manual that covers your bike and it doesn't have a oil hose diagram in it.my bike is a 75 sporty with the oil tank on the side. the hose at the very bottom of the tank goes to the pump (feed),the hose located about two thirds up on the tank goes to the breather line located on the backside of the cam gear cover and the hose that goes from the crankcase goes to the inlet by the oil cap(return).

RE: Oil coming from breather tube
I just noticed on my early 84 model that I have a oil leak on my bike I believe that it is leaking from this little hose tube I tried to trace it and it is burried behind eletrical wiring now \\;I no  \\;that it is not the over flow for the carb and breather from the side of the motor crankcase that goes to the carb.I wonder what this little hose is for maybe a breather for the primary any help would be appreciated.
