1970 XLCH Sportster Ironhead
Does anybody feel like opening up a discussion on a partial rebuild of a 1000cc Ironhead? \\; The chain broke and completely shattered the right side of the lower end. \\; I am about to start the process of tearing it apart while I look for parts and would like a few resources aside from the manual if I run into any problems. \\; Not to mention that I am going to need parts and would like some good resources for those too.

RE: 1970 XLCH Sportster Ironhead
I just saw this post you made.
Did the rear chain put a hole in the crankcase/transmission?
If that is the situation, I would tread lightly on doing a rebuild on the engine unless you have another engine as a spare. If you need crankcases then the work and expense involved will be great. Better to sell such an engine for the parts than sink a pile of money into it.
Maybe I misunderstand the damage done to the engine...........pg

Tell us more - what is the problem[s]? What info do you need?
You need both of these ...
Factory service manual: 99484-78
Factory parts catalog: 99451-78B
Local indie bike shop, HD dealership, J&P Cycles, eBay, various internet sellers. Just put the part numbers into the Google and eBay searches.

Where did you get those part numbers? They do not occur in the 99451-78B parts catalog.
A 1973 transmission is for right hand shift; 1975 is left side shift with the funky cross over parts.
I think that you can make it work but i do not know what parts will have to be changed. You may need to re-use some parts from 1975.
Another member may come along with better info.
