Default Help. Gas in oil tank?

RE: 1976 Sportster, 1000
I'm new to this forum, so bear with me.
I changed the oil the other day, then took the bike for a short ride. I checked the oil level when I got back home and there was more oil in the tank than before the ride - and smells a little on the gas side.
Any ideas on what the problem might be?? I need all the help I can get.
Thanks
B~

just a guess, but you might of had some oil in the engine, wet sumping, and with rings worn some the fuel smell would be gas getting past them and mixing with the oil. i always start my engine and let it run for a while before draining it.

How much more oil than before?&nbsp\\; Some of the oil remains in the crankcase when the motor is off, so that could explain that.&nbsp\\; The gas smell, hotrod351 is probably right about.&nbsp\\; Good indication that your rings are wearing or have worn.&nbsp\\; Do you blow blue smoke from the exhaust when the motor starts and you give it gas? &nbsp\\;
