RE: 76 Starter Issues
There were two different starters,Prestolite and Hitachi.
Not sure if both were used in '76 or not, you'd have to refer to a parts book.
I have a '70-'78 service manual that shows both starters but it doesn't tell what years had which.
Pretty sure the prestolite was the earlier version but not sure when they changed.

Aint that the truth. Luckily we have a shop in my area that works mainly on the older bikes

dealers won't want to mess with it, they don't belive in anything older than an evo

HI, whats all the fuss, call a hd dealer, have them look up the part #, then go get one.

RE: 76 Starter Issues
I have a 1976 Sporster, mostly redone, and if my memory serves me there were starters for Kick Only and for Electric Start. The bikes with kick start only had smaller batteries, starters, etc.
I hope I am not misinforming you. A good local shop may be more helpful than a dealer. I think Custom Chrome has starters for those bikes.
