Default Bendix questions

I just got a Bendix carb for my 75xlch, and have a couple of questions. Right now I have the edelbrock quicksilver which is completly different. How do I connect the throttle cable? Does the cable just slide through the hole and then just tighten the scew? right now my cable has that lillte round stub at the end, which has a female connection on the carb. I hope this is making sense to someone! I also recieved a piece that appears to be a thottle cable guide, where does this mount? thanks for everyones help.

Default RE: Bendix questions

I do not know if I can explain this where it is understandable, but the Bendix uses a hard wire for a throttle. Rather like a lawn mower, as opposed to the flexible braided cable used on most motorcycles.
Since I have always used nothing but the hard wire with a Bendix, I am not sure if a flexible cable is going to work. It would open it OK, but to close the butterfly on the carb may require the hard cable.
Maybe some other members have a Bendix hooked up with a flexible cable. If so, let's hear how you have yours hooked up. I am all ears.
The cable runs through the hole in the butterfly fitting having the small allenhead set screw.
You may be able to use a flexible cable, but have to connect an external coil spring to pull the throttle closed when you release the grip. On mine, the hard wire does the opening and the closing of the butterfly.....................pg

That makes pretty good sense. I understand what your saying. I will have to play around with it this week and see if I can get something to work. I would love to hear if anyone has gotten a regular braided cable to work. I really dont want to have to wait for another part to be shipped to me, when we have a long nice weather weekend coming up.

The Bendix got a flexible braided cableand a spring return in 73 (when H-D got rid of the internal throttle/piano wire/springless butterfly carb). So your 75 was originally like that.

You should not have too much problems mounting this carb, even if it's a pre-73 Bendix.

I just mounted a new Bendix. My choke cable is a solid wire. The throttle cable is a braided wire. The original Keihin on the bike used the braided cable with the **** on the end. When I bought the carb, my Inde dealer told me I needed a cable holder that sold separately from the carb. It is mounted on the back side of the top intake mounting flange. I also had to cut the end **** off the cable, run it through the guide hole on the carb, into the screw mechanism and tightened it down. Pics aren't the best but I will post them.

Chris, The carb had a braided wire with the brass ferrul on the end to connect it to the carb. The piece I sent that looks like the throttle cable guide is just that. I don't remember exactly how it attached (been well over 20 years since I had it on) but the shop manual should give you the right idea. You have to use that to hold the outside of the cable in a constant position. I think the picture Skinner posted show it on the upper left.

thanks for the pics and info. I have been sick for a couple of days but hoping to get everything mounted today, and finally go for a well tuned ride.
