Default intake seals? carb recommendations

I posted about the problem with sputtering in 4th gear, well I went out today and its doing it in all gears from about 1/3-full throttle. I pulled the carb and the intake manifold to check the rubber o-rings. Are these rings suposed to have silicone all around them? anyways didnt seem to have any air leaks. I think the problem is the main jet in the carb (too small) , which is an edelbrock quicksilver, I hate it. I cant find replacement needles for this carb anywhere. I want to go back to an old fashoned simple carb. anyone have any recomendations for a carb. 75xlch .20 over, drag pipes, 10:1 ,

Most people are going to recommend S&S Super E, but those things cost a butt load of money! Try a Mikuni 38MM VM round slide carb. You can get them for about 100 on ebay. Parts are hard to find for them but I found a site that sells jets, and rebuild kits for them.

An S&S Super E.Yes they are expensive but imo worth it.I put one on my 75 xlh 3 years ago, adjusted it per s&s.com instructions and it has purred ever since without adjustment of any kind.I would in no way shape form or fashion buy a used carb from anywhere. They are for sale for a reason..Kinda like going to the junk yard and buying a used carb for a vintage cuda. You get what you pay for.

No. How did you check for leaks? Get the bike running, spray carb cleaner around the manifold rubber bands. If it dies or runs faster you have a leak.

I agree but you don't necessaraily have to buy a used carb off of Ebay. In fact there are quite a few new S&S Carbs on there.

Really people are going to give you different answers. Each carb has its upsides and downsides. I sort of prefer the mikuni, but I have heard some really good things about the S&S. Even the stock Keihin's were a good stock carb. Much better in my opinion than the bendix's. But thats just my $.02
