Try to buy good quality chain lube and deal with it. It IS going to get messy. It comes with the territory.

I use Castrol "Chain Wax". Lube the chain with this stuff at least an hour or two before you ride (the night before works best), and it stays on pretty well. I've also had good luck with PJ1 Blue (but it's sticky if you get it on anything else). Don't use PJ1 Black or HD chain lube. Those will sling off more lube than stays on the chain.

The PJ1 Blueis what I am using now. Maybe I am not cleaning enough of the excess off. I will check into the Chain wax.

Thanks.

Buy a nickel plated chain and kiss heavy lubes goodbye. Nickel is self lubing. All you gotta do to maintain the chain is wipe it down with WD-40 or similar every now and then to clean it and lube the pins.

I have been running nickel plated chains for 10+ years and have had good results. I was using Tsubaki chains, but they are expensive. About 110 bucks each. Last year, I picked up this Western Powersports nickel plated chain for about 30 bucks. I have no complaints with it.

Now that you mention it. Previous owner said he put a heavy duty chain on it and he did not lube it. I wonder if it is nickel plated.
Can you tell by color? It has so much old lube on it now, I can't tell.

Nickel is silver.

The inside plates on the chain in the pic are silver. The outside plates are gold plated over the nickel. I don't care for the color, but it was cheap.

The Tsubaki I used to use was silver all over.

After wiping off a few links, it looks silver. The links have RK50S0 on them. I do not know what that really tells me.

RK is a brand of chain. You can cross reference the number here to find out what chain you have:
