Default question about crankcase vent

I have a early 84 sporty ironhead bike and the s&s carb is on the bike. I have noticed that the crankcase vent goes to the carb on some bikes with s&s carb. On mine the vent hose goes nowhere just hangs there. I have a shorty e carb any help would be appreciated Thanks Charly

If youare under the impression you can have your sayabout the environment and do your small bit to save the planet, you'll pipe it to the air cleaner, then you can burn it all as CO2 and it goes out of your exhaust, don't know for sure if it's better or not!!!

Me thinks there are bigger culprits around than my puny Sporty so don't give a damn, the bloody vent pipe goes nowhere... anyway, it's mostly pur air if your slinger is doing its job!!!

I have a 79 with S&S super E and my vent just goes down between the frame and motor. My carburetor has the 90 degree vent in the back, but has nothing attach to it. In the S&S instructions on page 5 for 80-85 sportster models, it says to "screw vent elbow into hole in air cleaner backplate and angle downward." and on page 10 for 80-85 sportsters it says"connect crankcase breather hose to air cleaner backplate hose fitting" Hope that helps.

I believe it was S&S cycle. I'd go online and browse. I think they have a '"manual" header on there, or maybe a technical section.

Just went to S&S cycle web site and found it. Click on "technical" when you get there and then click on "instruction sheet" and then look for sheet 51-1012-"carburetor super E&G" That has the info I used. Also tell you how to adjust carburetor.

i also run the s&s shorty super e and the vent should go to a brass elbow that screws into the air cleaner on the backside you have a plastic plug in it from the factory.u may b able to find the fitting at your local autozone advance napa oriles, if the retard at the counter can point you in the rite direction. fyi that vent IS NOT THERE TOO LOOK COOL AND DOSNT HAVE A THING TO WITH CLEAN AIR ..... ive bored and stroked to just over 1200 cc and learned the hard way by assumeing it didnt matter. its there to help the rings seal by lowering crankcase pressure. it stands to reason that if a piston moves 1000cc of air on the top it will also move the same air on the bottom it does build a small amount of pressure 1 to 4 psi that line is plumed into a negative press. zone behind the airfilter to pull down that pressure. start the bike and notice it puffs out air???? imagine that at 5000 rpm lets see 1000cc of air @5000rpm is alot of air that has to go somewhere? its called posative crankcase ventalation.it will cause an increase in blow by seal failure and the oil will brake down faster due to the increase in hydro carbin raw unburnt fuel.... so dont b like me hook it up and change the oil befor it does damage. in my case 2 pistons the crank rings and every bushing and berring in the motor and both jugs. oil ann said i had .5% hc content and it thined the oil enouff to let the pistons make contact with the jug at 9000rpm and bye bye all that money.
s&s and harley davidson pay fat for people to think about this stuff all day long ever wonder why? lets say that hose cost 1.00 then they have what 10000 bikes built every year? and i know thats a low # thats 10,000.00 harley could save if it wasnt nessary plus paying someone 40k a year to put it on 50,000 saved they would if it didnt have to b there u know theyd cut the fat....

Hum, Blueboomer,

Me think you could apply for a job ar S&S or H-D, they'd be impressed...

Don't matter one yota if the engine vent is direct to atmosphere or to air cleaner...

As a rule, for H-D, pre 1979 = vent to atmosphere, post 79 = EPA/California do-goodersput their noses in = vent to air cleaner...

As long as one don't block the vent, engine will be happy and should not collect water as your stroker did...

Like I said, S&S calls for yours to go to the breather, but if it would give you peace of mind, I would call them and ask then you should have no doubts. But you will get the same info as their web page. Not sure why your still unsure. The manual says to air cleaner - thats 1 for air cleaner, "thbluebnloomer" suggested all should go to the air cleaner - thats two for air cleanerand "the frenchowl" says post 1979 to air cleaner - thats three for air cleaner, and Im going with the manual and saying take it to air cleaner - thats four for taking it to air cleaner. Dont see the confusion. Sometimes when you get alot of different ideas and opinions it can seem confusing, but I think if you go back and just weed through it all and just pick out the parts you need to answer the guestion where to take it" then it will become clearer. "Take it to the air cleaner 90 degree fitting"
