Well, I answered this, but it appears the post went into the ether and disappeared. Here ya go:

'74 Sporty should be a Hitachi starter. If yours is, the OEM p/n is 31570-73.

Thanks for the reply. this is for a friend and we are trying to get his dad's old sporty running. The bike currently has a "Prestolite" starter on it. We can't find one anywhere. My buddy has an old manual for the bike that shows both the hitachi and the prestolite. Would there be anything needed to switch the the Hitachi? Is one starter more reliable or powerfull then the other? Thanks for the help. Jimbo

Here's the OEM # for a Prestolite: 31458-66TA

There are enough differences that they aren't directly interchangeable. What's wrong with the starter? There are rebuild kits available from J&P, and others. www.jpcycles.com

It didn't crank very well so he took it apart to see how bad it was and it has some broken contacts and is worn. He looked at the rebuild kit and wanted to see a price diffrence between new and rebuild. That is when the whole "should it have a Hitachi or Prestolite" question came into play. Local Harley shop said it should have a Hitachi...We have gotten bad info from them before so wanted to ask those who know. Thanks for the help.

Check out bikebandit.com. They have a lot of OEM parts, including starter parts.
