Default Oil & such

How high should the oil level in the tank be? Also, I've noticed a few Ironheads with additional filters on the left engine mount, is this necessary since there is one in the tank?

Can't help you on the level 'cause I can't remember. The in-tank filter is better than nothing, but not by much. That's why you'll see the spin-on filters added.

Make sure you buy the modern drop in, paper, automotive style in tank oilfilters.I use the brand Pro-form filter because they still make all filters for old bikes. They are just as good as the other filters on the market. The stock OEM filter was know to be junk and was the cause for many engine failures back in the days.

Mine has no dipstick. It showed the bottom of the filter cold so I put in 1/2 quart of the same oil the PO used & started it. Once it ran a little I looked again & the level was up about 1/2 way on the filter so I went riding. Where do you get the Pro-Form filters? They used Castrol 20W50 racing oil & I want it out. Seems like everyone elses bike, it uses oil & I hate that

The ProForm filters are good. I used them for a while, until I found a decent replaceable filter cartridge that will fit in the stock canister. Either can be gotten out of most any Harley aftermarket catalog. The best I remember the ProForms are 8-9 bucks. I get the replaceable cartridge elements from Jireh for $1.99 each.

Check the oil when it is hot. When hot, make sure you have about 1 inch of air/space in the top of the tank. That is full. If you get the tank completely full it will blow oil out the breather. You can try the HD360 20w-50 oil. Most people think it is a good quality oilfor a Dino oil. However, dealers sell it for 4.95 per qt which is expensive. I know some people use a 20w-50 car oil and dont have any problems. I get the Proform filters at J&P cyclesfor $6.99

If you want to use a good quality and inexpensive oil, try som Havoline 20w-50.
