Default Old tyme tune-up

Before deciding to to have my top-end redone (3rd generation Harley onlyindy shop) I was fouling plugs about every 30 miles. one turned eventually to oil foul- the other was gas. Went thru lots of plugs thataway but I have been thinking Whatever happened to the old tyme sandblast and blow clean then re-use fouled plugs? For years that was a tune up clean the plugs set the points and go. Why did that stop? just some thoughts Dusty

They are still around Dusty. I have a Snap-On hanging on the shop wall, and they still sell them of course.
But fouling plugs need the cause fixed, and you seem to be doing that. Oil fouling is from valve and piston ring/bore wear, if not some more serious reason and the gas fouling is from the carb. I once had my Sportster gas fouling the spark plugs every 20 miles or so. This was at highway speeds and they would get sooty black and the bike would only run on one cylinder.
The reason for that turned out to be a degraded O ring at the main jet housing on the Bendix carb. This allowed raw fuel to leak around the main jet and dumped the raw fuel straight into the venturi. I have kept an eye on it ever since..........pg

You can get a spark plug cleaner at Harbor Freight.

They don't do that anymore because it doesn't make as much money as selling new plugs. Also, there is a potential for liability suits because you can change the heat range if you over do it. Once in a while, I see cleaners and testers on Ebay.
