Default Oil Level - 1972 XLH

Okay, here is my "last" question. I drained my primary/crankcase of oil. I added 1.5 pints like the manual said. After having problems with my stripped plug (other thread) I lost some oil in fixing the problem. Anyway, I had read that to check the oil level I should remove the small screw close to the footpeg. I did that thinking I would need to add oil. Instead oil came out of that plug for 30 minutes or more. When it got to a small trickle I put the screw back in. This doesn't make any sense to me. It seems like I should be adding oil rather than draining it. Any ideas?

Something is not right with that. Silly question, but was the bike on the side stand or sitting upright? It needs to be straight upright to do the oil level check.
If it was upright, then it sounds like the 1 1/2 pints are staying inside the primary compartment and not flowing into the transmission.
Now, I have no idea how that could be, because the hole allowing oil to transfer is considerable size. (See attached pic of hole that is in the trans door) I cannot imagine it plugging up. You may be pulling the primary cover off to have a look again..........pg

Yes, I made sure the bike was sitting upright first. I have not started the bike yet. Perhaps I need to do that and then check it again? But from what I've read, the screw I backed out is to check the level as you are filling it up, so I should be accurate. I just don't want to ride this with too little oil.

Something is still not right about this. The 1.5 pints of oil should be in the trans/primary compartment. Here are pics of that screw location......pg

Edit note: The oil goes in first......Let it drain over into the transmission area.......Then remove the level screw. Very little, if any oil should come out after putting 1.5 pts in.

Yes, that is the screw I backed out. The only difference is that mine is an allen head (obviously it has been replaced).

Did you see my edit note on my last post regarding the screw locations?
I hadn't seen the edit when I posted, but what you described is what I did. I had drained the oil out of both plugs (that's how I discovered the stripped one) and put them back in. I made sure and set the bike level to make sure it all drained out. I then filled with 1.5 pints of oil as the manual says. It was after this that I "fixed" my stripped plug with JB Weld. I lost a little bit of oil during that process, but not much. Anyway, it was after the JB weld was dry that I decided to check the oil level because I assumed I would be low, having lost some oil. That was when I backed out the screw and oil started coming out. It drained for about 30 minutes until it was just a trickle. The pan I was draining in already had old oil so I'm not sure how much came out, but I would guess as least a few ounces or so. Also, after it stopped draining I left thescrew out and poured about an ounce more of oil in just to see what would happen. It immediately poured right back out of the oil level hole.

OK......I suggest you do this:
Fill the transmission with oil (1.5 pts) and then remove the level screw.
If oil drains out, just let it drain until it stops. Replace the screw after that.
Now drain the transmission into a container so that you can get a rough measure of the amount of oil remaining in the trans. Careful with that drain plug tightening.
If you have anywhere close to 1.5 pts draining out you are good to go with that.
Refill the trans.
I know this is some extra work, but it will assure you that you have enough oil in the trans to run it..........pg
