1970 XLCH sportster engine
Looking to find out more information on our 1970 XLCH ironhead sportster.
Vin on Frame and engine match as the 1970 placement. I am trying to find out more info on the motor as well as where to find parts. It ran 10 years ago and then was just stored. Now we need to replace all the regular stuff (plugs, chain, fluids, etc...) We are giving it to our son to fix up (keep original).
VIN 4A19282H0
eNGINE ID 770-5778
We were told that the engine was an 1100cc but apparently there were no 1100cc's made on this bike in 1970.
Also trying to find out original colors
Thanks

so how did you get that it is a 900 sportster. The vin breakdown would lead me to believe it is a 1000. That is why I wanted to know if the stamped numbers on the bottom of the crank case actually meant anything other than it was a 1970.
The frame and motor vin only identify the year and model which shows it to be the xlch.

The dealers will be useless for any ironhead information.
Here is a little early Sportster History most of which is accurate.

You need to buy these two books ...
99484-78 Factory Service manual
99451-78B Factory Parts Catalog
Buy from a local indie motorcycle shop, HD dealer, or put the part numbers into the Google and eBay searches. They are widely available. These two books are your most important shop tools.
The case numbers, or belly numbers, tell you that the cases are original. It is useful to have a matched set. Note that having part of the number crossed out and other numbers stamped is done at the HD factory.
Some places to try for NOS parts that i know of ...

Sportsters are right side shift, left side brake until and including 1974. Then the gov't mandated all bikes to be left side shift. For '75 & '76 they use a crossover linkage to avoid re-designing/re-manufacturing internal engine parts. 1977 is the first year for "true" left side shift Sportsters.
