Stage 1, V+H slip ons- Cause a Miss on warm days at low RPM
Multiple dealers around here had told me the ECM download would leave the bike running lean, but healthy after an ECM download. They all mentioned the download was programmed for SE pipes, not V+H, but they would be compatible.
This has not been the case. On warm/hot days, I will experience a miss as I pull away from stop lights/signs. I have noticed this as many as 5-6 times within 25 miles. Basically everytime I slowed down to a stop.
The mechanics at my dealer mentioned they had seen it lately with a few other bikes and couldn't figure it out. One mechanic even mentioned breaking down the head to make sure it wasn't a factory problem. As I was pulling away, the service mngr ran outside and asked me if I could bring it in within the next week.
Needless to say, the next week was cooler and did not experience any problems. The following weekend was warmer and I did have a problem when the bike was sitting at a light for a few minutes.
My bike has 1400 miles on it. I can see the header blueing already near the right floorboard, at the end of the heat shield.
Dealer told me yesterday that it is the ECM. He also claimed they do not have a dyno and therefore do not install PC's. He also told me it is expected and I may have to deal with it. Is this indeed normal?
I would not have done the stage 1 and V+H's had they not told me it was compatible.
Do the standard maps on PC work satisfactorily? Will the occasional lean miss cause long term engine problems if I don't spend money on a PC? Should I ask for my money back on the download since it clearly is causing issues?
Thanks.

RE: Stage 1, V+H slip ons- Cause a Miss on warm days at low RPM
I had the download on my bike when I had the SE II slip ons before doing my upgrade. When we opened up the heads to put in the 98" kit, the indications of lean burning bike were pretty obvious. These thing burn LEAN, even with the "upgraded" ECM download for the Stage I upgrade.
HDWRENCH is the guy that did my motor build. When all done, we sat down with the SERT and programmed the ECM. We did not have a dyno, so we were going by he trained ear, and my butt. (Interesting mental picture I know). Anyway, by the time we found a MAP that was worth anything, the amount of fuel added to the AFR at idle (and everywhere else) was SIGNIFICANTLY more than what we started with.
The EPA has really made the requirements tough, and these bike run lean...and HOT.

The downloads are part specific for the most part and altering the parts can sometimes cause these problems. What I might do is to install a TFI/DFO and this would be the means to richen things up to where you would gain a few HP and run properly. It's about the easiest/cheapest way to richen up the fuel in your situation as it only deals with the addition of fuel. Easy install and works well.
Here's a link for the DFO if you decide to go that route with a good price, just remember to get a stealth version for 04 and later bikes.
