Shovelhead voltage regulator @ 30 Amps?
Just got my first harley, a '70 Sporty kicker...after rebuilding the bendix carb, finding the secret to getting an airtight intake, (seems so simple once you finally figure it out...(elec. tape!)), replacing the leaking valve guide seals (3X), and fixing the damn kick start gears, the damn thing won't charge...turns out to be the Bosch regulator (bikehas agenerator, but the shop manual shows 70+ bikeshad alternator/solid state reg.???---vin on engine shows it is a 70 motor...) I happened to find the same bosch type regulator at the junk yard (thank you rotting VW!) The only difference is that it is a 30 amp unit, while the old one was a 16 amper....
So bieng to cheap to just buy the new $90 correct one, I threw this one on the bike and crossed my fingers. Now the bike is charging, 12-12.5v at 1000rpm, and about 14.5v at 2000-2500r's. so for so good right?
My question is what sort of trouble am I getting into? None of my light bulbs popped and no elec smoke/fires, (yet...) Could I be overcharging the new battery at high rpm?
Would appreciate your thoughts before I catch an exploding battery with my leg!! ---oh man, just walk it off!!!
thanks!
