Default Switching my mm efi to carb or thunder heart efi ?

So I have a 1999 flhrci road king , it's a awesome bike except the peace of crap m&m efi , I have dumped money into this system with no change , I changed the throttle speed sensor , engine temp sensor , nothing , at first start up its fine and then about 15 minutes down the road my idle will jump up 500 rpm give or take , then back down , I can't figure it out , I'm going bald from pulling my hair out , anyone have any help on that matter , I was also thinking about switching to carb , I live in Cali , can I do this ? Without having emissions police chasing me ? I also was looking at a thundermax conversion for morelli , that's about 1800 bucks , the hd dealer said the carb switch was about 1000 but another 800 in labor , can anyone give me advice , anyone that has done this ? What should I do before all my hair is gone

Just had a guy I know do the Thundermax conversion on his 01 MM injected Road King. Can't believe the difference it made. First and second gear can light rear tire just by twisting throttle. Thought about changing mine over, but here they want 2500.00 for the conversion plus another 500.00 to install, and my MM injection has been trouble free for 54000 miles so far, so I can't see the cost.

Bodean, I'm looking at an 00 Ultra. Glad to see someone is having good luck with the M&M. Do you do anything special to keep it working good? I just printed that post about the guy with the bad idle control actuator. Anything that moves needs to be cleaned and lubed.

I just keep the air bleeds cleaned with MAF cleaner. ( about once a month or so) and have yet to have a problem.

Now alot of things are becoming clear. I've searched the FI forum a bit and the common problems seem to be with idling. The M&M system is becoming old and needs a little maintenance. It seems many of the problems guys are having may be self-inflicted. TPS out of adjustment or gunked up air-bleeds. Thanks

I replaced my MM with a S&S single bore. Still on the lift will report when on the road. Have it running. I don't want to run it to long with no load. Seems to run better. (old pics)

Dan, what problems were you experiencing with the stock FI?

Inconsistent running at first. the bike would run great some days, sometimes it wouldn't. Then the idle went up as high as 4500 rpms. I would press the stepper motor back in and lower the rpms, but it still ran rough. I did some troubleshooting and cleaned the air bleed holes and replaced the engine temp. sensor due to a trouble code.

I had planned to run the S&S setup before the high idle problem. Due to the limitations of the MM system. I installed a big bore, cams etc. With the S&S ECU, oxy sensors and ProTune software. A lot of tuning options.
It should run great. I'll have it on the road next week.

The S&S and the TMax systems both work great for this conversion. One thing to always look at with a MM system is throttle shaft to bore dimensions. Those hole DO get bigger and leak air. Once it is a 'leaker' the only fix is to get another TB with good a good shaft and TB bore.

FWIW, Techno Reasearch has devised a tuner for MM bikes that works decently. Just have to find a techno dyno shop that has done this b4.

MM makes very high end stuff for Ferrari, etc. MOCO cheaped it down to junk.

I really love our Delphi equipped bikes. MM..... not so much.

I'm switching over my 2001 flhri to carb, the reason being is my ecm capped out and took other electrical components with it. It is super expensive to fix.
Carb is a mikuni 42 -19 total carb kit $489
Thunderheart stand alone ignition system $249.
Pingle tank conversion kit $50
Pingle petcock $113

Bike runs like a champ and the fuel mileage is right up there with the mm efi. Performance is perfect actually better than efi. I have nothing assist efi except the price to fix it.
