Default Charging system

I had my old battery tender on the bike for a few hours and the red light never went off, so i felt it to see how hot it was and it was very hot. so went to batteries plus had them test it and basically it was junk . also as the day went on i noticed the check engine light and battery light comes on occasionally on the bike ( 2004 Heritage ) This is a new battery that i had rechecked to see if it was good and it is ok. the charging volts are 11.53 and the guy said this is to low and should be at 11.8 something. so my question is did the battery tender screw up something in the charging system ? anything i can do at home before i take it into the shop,,,,,,,,,, Thanks

Check out the sticky on charging system issues by Dr. Hess in the Evo section. This guy knows what he's talking about!
You should be able to diagnose very easily with his instructions .
