HQ 500/0034 cams and fuel map
Ok, I don't want this to turn into a cam discussion but rather a fueling/timing.
I have run the HQ 500 for over a year in my 07 FLHTPI. I use a PCV with AT, the motor is a 103 and of course I couldn't find a canned map for it. I used two canned maps from fuel moto, one for the SE 204 and another for the SS 510 to get the bike going after cam install. I used a local tuner in town (only game in town I know of) that is more geared towards metrics. He played with it for a couple of hours and the bike ran ok but MPG was in the gutter and the bike had a terrible stumble/hesitation between 2200 to 2600 RPM. Crack the throttle and she would haul azz.
I played with the PCV some and leaned the AFR table out in the bad spots and the hesitation went away. Over time I have leaned the bike out more and more in the 2000 to 4000 rpm range and MPG has greatly improved.
I have still not found a good tuner in my area but up at MB Bike Week I put the bike on the DYNO just to see what the AFR's look like and see what she is putting down. 4th gear pull HP 85.3, TQ 97.7. AFR right at 14 between 1700 to 2000 RPM then 2000 to 3300 RPM 13.6 by 3500 RPM 13.1 and back to 13.5 past 5000 when the AFR drops back to 13.1 or so.
The thing is that I'm now in the 13.8 to 14.4 AFR, most maps I have seen for other cams are richer, 12.8 to 13.6 give or take. The maps from FM for either cam never went leaner then 13.8 anywhere, same with maps from PC.
So, since I'm not a tuner and know enough about the PCV to be dangerous I'm looking for experiences others have had with this cam grind.
Iclick has done great write ups about his experiences with the SE255. He has run a pretty lean map on a cam that I would think would ping a lot sooner then the 500/0034.
