Default Choosing a Voltage Regulator??

Howdy all. I am trying to decipher which type voltage regulator I need to buy for my existing charging system. I have a rebuilt Shovel with S&S cases, so I'm not even sure what year the remainder of the motor is. It came with a stator and rotor, but does not have a regulator. The stator plug, in the engine case, is the two-prong type with two pins sticking out of the case.

So, I see that different voltage regulators are rated for different amps. How do I know what to get? My only theory is that I simply by the regulator that has the right "connection type" for that two prong stator plug, and whatever amp it is must be what I need?? (I think the J&P catalogue says the regulator/plug style for attaching to this two prong connectoris a 17.5 amp rating...others plug styles are rated at like 22, 30 etc.)

thanks much
