according to Dakota Digital (called and spoke to Cam) this is not going to work for you because of the can-bus as FXD pointed out above. However, if you want a tach you can purchase one that is can-bus "ready" and will be a direct plug in but didn't tell me where to find them specifically. Their answer to this is the MCL-3212 which is combo speedo/tach for the 3-3/8" and MCL-2011 for the 4-1/2"

Signed on for an answer. Mines' Harley and it does it. Started at 30K however on it. Seems to hang up at about 25-2800 and jump to 4000 erratic like. At first I thought it was interferience from bad plugs since the had 10K and son said it had a slight miss but new ones had no help. I checked ground. Have not pulled console to check speedometer plug were mine connects. I made the pin connection from a 32 pin computer pin for mine since tack came without it off ebay. I think the motor may be going bad in mine (what drives needle) since it only does in in below 45 degree weather. If your's is new I would make them give me a new one. There is a tac pick up on ECM and the speedometer. Either works for 04 onward I think until I guess as above stated for the canbus system.

I just wonder why when on the 2012 Sportster tac operated just fine. No needle bounce. Then same tac put on 2012 Dyna; the bouncing needle happens? Must be two different computers? Thought if changes happened for one model that it would for the other as well. Guess not the case here.

Guess I misread. Are you just asking if it will bounce since dealer said it's not designed for the Dyna? If not compatible you would think they would just say it will not work. Know in the past Sporty always seem to lag behind with the tec of the bigger bikes. Is canbus a no wire digital reception like a remote control anywhere on a Harley? I know on my car the radio controls on the wheel I think are.

Yep, 2012 Sportster has a serial data connection at ECM.
