Default Confused as all get out- brake light problem

My brake light was staying on all the time after putting on my new grips. I figured out the brake light switch on the handle bars was broken. I went to J&P and got a replacement. When I took stuff apart and cut the wires to the old switch the brake light went off and worked with the foot brake as expected. When I installed the new switch, it seems to be working opposite as it should be. When the button is pushed in the brake light goes off, when I release the button it comes back on! WTF? Bad switch? I tried reversing the wires just for giggles, same result.

on mine button out is lights on,
button in is lights off.
It works as described due to positioning of lever.
