Default Fried Stators

I know lots of people have fried a stator. Just recently I toasted mine and spent a few hours today rippin' the bike apart and putting in a new stator, battery, and voltage regulator. Now, I know Ive got the problem fixed, but what I want to know is what is causing this. Im pretty damn sure my battery gave up the ghost and my stator was working too hard to try and charge a battery that would not take a charge. The stator got itself good and hot and hence fried itself. I want to hear others opinions and experiences though. Why are these stators frying and what can we do to prevent it? Id rather not spend $500+/- and 4 hours of labor, every 25,000 miles on a stator, VR, and battery.

thanks
