Default Idle question

I have an 06 SG. I have installed Thunderheader slipons, SE stage 1 intake, HD download #1, and a Cobra FI200R fuel management system. When the bike is sitting and idleing, the rpms are pretty steady at 1000. But, every few minutes, the rpms drop about two to three hundred and it sounds like it wants to die. Then, just as quickly, it comes back up and stays at 1000 until it does a again a few minutes later. It almost acts like a load is being placed on it momentarily. Any thoughts?

Fer Sheittz and Grinnz, take the Cobra out of the loop..........

If the idle drop is still there, check the fuel pressure, injector connections and operation of the ET sensor/IAT sensor....

If the idle stays where it is supposed to be, it is the Cobra unit......

Thanks for the quick response. I guess I should have mentioned the rpms fluctuated like that before the FI2000.

Injectors, Fuel pressure, IAC/ET/MAP sensors AND the associated wiring and connectors are where to look......

Life sure would be easier if you had a SERT.... Then you'd have the ability to "Data Log" and see all of your parameters.....

Might have to take it to a shop that has Digital Tech, or you can buy the Datona Twin Scan, and do it yourself......

You almost went over my head with that reply. I am just learning about these twin cams. I also wanted to ask how the injectors go into the place where they mount. From the manual, it looks like they just slip in and have a clip holding them. I noticed when I was hooking up the Cobra that one of them (rear cylinder) seemed like it turned a little. If it screws in, it was lose. If it just pops in and has a clip, it was ok.

From a Retired Gunny, I'll break it down "Barney Style".........

Injectors are press fit into the manifold, they are held in place with a fuel rail and 1 clip each...... They will rotate on their axis in the rail/manifold

IAC - Idle Air Controller - allows a SPECIFIC amount of air in the manifold during startup/warmup..... as temp rises, motor decreases in step count.....

ET - Engine Temperature sensor - Mounted in the front cylinder head, adjusts fuel dwell (Volume/time) and spark depending on combustion chamber temps....

MAP - Manifold Absolute Pressure - measures the amount of mainfold pressure to determine the volume/speed of air and amount of oxygen in the air along with the IAT (Intake Air Temp) sensor.....

Fuel pressure SHOULD be constant and not fluctuate with time or engine speed......

You should get a scanning type device to OBSERVE, MONITOR and COMPARE your observed values to specs located in the Electrical diagnostics manual.....

SERT, TwinScan and Digital Tech (HD shop Only) are what I am familiar with....

I know it takes time to answer questions and explain things but I sure do appreciate you doing it. I understand a little bit better now. I will do a search for the scanner you mentioned. Thanks again! Al.

SERT = Screamin' Eagle Race Tuner[8D]

much more control over the ECM and no add on box to worry about breaking.

What he said........you can tune it yourself 1000 times if you wish........If you tighten the mirror you can re-tune & adjust as needed then hit the upload button and you are there........it's like sending your bike an email...
