2001 Roadking ECM replace?

Ride died, ECM needs replaced. Must it be replaced with a factory ECM or is there an aftermarket upgrade? My bike has a hypercharger air intake and slip on Python pipes. If I have to spend $500 bucks I might as well up grade, just not sure what to get or is the ECM mandatory no matter what I do.
