Why not try this then as long as the parts are not in stock

You can pick up the lead on the relay on #86 and put a momentary switch(pushbutton) in it and wire it to a 12 volt source and you'll find that it probably starts ok then , which will confirm the problem from the relay up to the switch (probably the switch)

When you say 'the switch', are you meaning the ignition switch (on the dash -the key switch - which is what I have apart & have to order), or are you referring to the 'start' button on the handlebar?

I believe what he was trying to say is is that you should remove the wire from #86 and replace it with a line from the battery (+12v) with a momentary switch inline.. That way it can be your temporary starter until you get the parts..

Or maybe I'm just CRAZY!!!

Just a momentary switch like you could get at a radio shack will do to test it out or as NFE said you can use it as a temporary set up

By momentary switch , I mean something like a pushbutton type of switch where it is only closing the circuit while the switch is pushed like the starter button, then when you let go , the circuit is opened.

Yes.. Here is a link to a momentary switch that most if not all Radio Shacks should carry in stock..

Momentary Switch

NFE.... Yes, I understood that part. But I just wanted to clarify his reference to 'the switch' as being the starter switch (since we have also been talking about the ignition switch).

.....and wouldn't touching the test lead 'momentarily' to the battery act like a momentary switch?

Yes it would, however you could not drive it doing this every time you wanted to start it

Hey TC...
I think I've got it! The ignition switch!! (not the starter switch) I cleaned up the contacts and reversed the roller to put the worn side on the other side, and I've not been able to make it fail.. I haven't ridden the bike yet & got things hot, (raining here today) but it is definitely better than it was. Hopefully a test ride will produce the same result.
Thanks much for your help!
