Blowing Fuses!

Blowing Fuses!
I have a 2002 Road King. As I am leaving town for several weeks, I thought I would install a quick connect on my battery for a trickle charger. No big deal. Just loosened the bolts on the battery terminals, added the connections for the + and -, kind of pushed the wiring down and out of the way and let the quick connect dangle out of the right side of the seat.
Upon completion, I hooked up the charger for ten minutes or so until it indicated a full charge. Then I took her out for a short ride. Much to my dismay I blew two fuses! My headlight and my instruments (speedometer).
Scratched my head then pulled off the seat again to take a look around. Nothing to indicate a short or anything. I was a little concerned because of the lack of clearance near the negative terminal. I had to sort of push the wiring harness out of the way to get the bolt unscrewed from this terminal. But I didn't seem to do any damage to it! Snugged up the terminals a bit and replaced the fuses and everything was fine until I started her up again. Then Blooey! Lost the fuses again!
Any ideas?
