Default Hard starting Dyna - stator

Had been having some trouble starting my '05 Dyna when the weather started turning cold ...

I checked out the battery (less than 4 months old ... bought in Sep '10) ... checked out okay ....

When I had a full charge (from my trickle charger) it started okay ... so, I had the dealership run an electrical system check ....

It showed an inconsistent feed coming from the stator ... they recommended changing the stator and quoted $420 to do it (quoted 2.2 hrs labor and shop supplies) ....

I decided to tackle the job myself ... I was able to get the parts at a scheduled sale the next day for $123.48 ... just got the stator and the screws ... didn't need primary fluid or a new gasket since I run a belt drive with dry clutch ....

Ended up taking about 5 hrs ... but, I removed the inner primary to replace the shifter shaft seal that had been leaking a little ... that time also included 45 min - 1 hr for a parts run ....

The '05 Dyna uses a three-phase 38 amp stator ... my only problem once I got it almost done was reassembling the plug that goes to the voltage regulator .... The service manual does not tell you how they go into the deutsch plug ... nor is the electrical diagram any help ... all three leads are black wire and plug into three black leads into the voltage regulator ....

Well, saw a thread on here on a '00 Road King and it mentioned that it makes no difference how they go into the plug ... so, I figured it must not matter or they would use color coded leads and give specific instructions on how they are to be installed ....

So far so good ... got it all buttoned back up and runs fine ... will be sure to post a follow up if I have any further info ... but, I thought this way if anyone has the same question and does a search, my experience might help the next one to have the same question ....

You are correct.. It does not matter where which of the 3 goes.

$420? WTF? You can buy the entire rotor and stator kit from Zanottis for $200

My thoughts exactly ... got the stator for $120 ... looks like I am going to have to replace the voltage regulator, too (P/N74631-04) ... $129.47 at Zanotti ....
