Default battery charging connections

hi , Ive got a CTEK XS800 battery charger , this can be left connected for long periods(months) and comes with a set of permanent connectors , which it says should be connected as follows , on a bike mounted battery ,red to possy terminal , black to neggy terminal earth wire on bike frame , if you use these when the battery is off the bike , red to possy, black to neggy terminals on battery , what I'm wondering is can i connect to the battery terminals and charge while the battery is connected , there is still an earth off the neggy terminal to the engine case , so i would think it wouldn't matter as its still earthed , but i would like some pro advice why or why not , the battery neg earth is a bitch to get to on my nightster , and the battery is a pig to reconnect every time as well ,theres not much room anywhere really but i don't want to hurt anything , thanks guys
