Default Tach shuts down

My tach sometimes just goes to zero. It happens often. I have done the complete wire checks, and everything looks O.K., but it still happens. Dealer says tach is fine, but you all know how I feel about dealers. 2001 FLHTCUI.

Anyone else? Any ideas?

OK. I will try not to be technical, but when this happens (Tach reads zero), is the engine running????

>>>>My tach sometimes just goes to zero,
Do you notice this mostly when you turn off the key?? I felt that one coming!

Only thing that comes to mind, did you check the GROUND side of the circuit, most often overlooked, and don't rule out a bad tach, even though the dealer says it's OK, they probably just wired it up once , it worked that time and all is OK with them. Electrical problems of this sort are often intermittent.

One other thing is to check the wire leads with a meter to see if you may have a broken wire inside the insulation

I never thought about checking that. I guess ripping the batwing off and those two hours with a polarity checker on the wires was a waste of time.

Joe, hopefully you will learn one of these days to check some things with the engine running.

Okay, jokey jokey.... Seriously, did you check to make sure you had a good ground and there were no bare wires where it goes through the tach housing?

TxMoores, I checked everything, but will take another look at the ground. My time is free, and I really don't want to have to spend the big bucks on a new one unless I have to. I may just run a second ground wire to the unit to see if that helps. if it does, I will know the cable is bad.

Thanks.

Joe
