My 2008 Street Glide has been running rough. It has tru duals,highflow air breather.fuelpak and 2" rush slipons. Harley cant detect the problem. They said its running fine. You can really tell there is a run problem when you cruse in sixth gear at around 60 mph. The bike has lost its smoothness and I have lost gas mielage. I looked at the plugs and the front is a light grey, the back is brown. This does not sound good. This is not a gradul problem. It happened all at once coming home from a long trip to arkanasa. Thanks for any help.

Check for an intake leak with some WD40. Plugs aren't a good indication of any mixtures any longer with the lead removed from fuels. Most colors you see now are the fuel additives. The rear cylinder will usually be a bit richer than the front in any event.

Did it set any codes? What was done recently, new plugs or wires? Make sure both of the wires are securely attached to the plugs and the plugs are gaped and installed properly.
The wires sometimes will not be snapped on to the plugs properly bit it will usually set a code for incomplete or missing combustion when this happens. (P1358 orP1357-P1356 orP1353)

 

No codes according to dealer. I changed the plug wires today and visually checked the Delco? There was no difference in performance. I was also told to put a new Delco voltage regulator on the bike? Explain the 10w40 trick for the exhaust.

The WD40 trick is where you use a can of the WD 40 and spray it around the intake manifold to head connections and other intake areas to see if you can detect a difference in sound or idle while spraying it. It's used to detect an intake leak that could be causing a problem like you are having.

You would know if a code was set by the light lit in the speedo either for a short while after start up or constantly signifying a code present at that time as opposed to a historic code if it goes out.

There were also some problems with the fuel filter leaking on your year bike to that would cause running problems.Bulletin #M-1224.
Many have said that when you turn the ignition that a whooshing sound can be heard with the fuel cap removed. This is probably the fuel pressure escaping from the broken part and is more noticable with a lower fuel level in the tank.

Rumor has it the MOCO has been using the upgraded part in assembly since January....the 07 build dates are the ones with the defective part up to 12/07. Check your build date on the sticker on the neck of the bike.

Here's how you can check for codes yourself and what they mean.

The IM (instrument module) is capable of displaying DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes).
Speedometer Self Diagnostics: The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).

1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.

2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.

3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word “diag” should then appear.

4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.

5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer

6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word “none” will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.

7 - Record the codes.

8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.

9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.

10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

On models not equipped with a tachometer "No Rsp" will appear when the tachometer identifier is selected.

"No Rsp" (no response) will also appear if the run/off switch is in the off position when doing this procedure.

I thank you for your time Peppi. I will try the 10w40 trick today and address the codes. Maybe with the help and knowledge from this forum we can detect my problem. Its really bad when you know there is something wrong with your bike but the dealer says its ok. Its hard to find a real mechanic to trouble shoot.
