Default stupid question: which gauge 20 or 16

hi all i am fixing up my 1985 fxrt and i was checking the wiring and there are couple of wires that need to be replaced,

my question is what gauge wire do i use ?

right now other than the three wires that do to the ignition switch all the wires are 20 gauge wires. Is this the right gauge? or should it be bigger. I am having a hard time finding the 20 gauge wires in certain colors but easily find them in 18 and 16 gauge so i got suspicious. any help will be much appreciated.

I'd say if they were working with 20 then a step up to 18 couldn't hurt if it gives you the color combinations you're looking for. You just don't want to go smaller and the jump to 16 might be too big and you could run into a connection size problem.
