A friend is looking at a 2001 E/G. Is it true that some late 01's had the delphi? Being new to all this modern technolgy, is there an easy way to tell the two different systems apart. Ive heard both good and bad of M&Ms. Sounds like they're ok if left stock? I believe the bike has about 30k miles.
2002 is the year of the Delphi ECM. The EFI parts in all HDs are still made by Magnetti-marelli, a major contractor to HD. The manifold-vacuum reading speed density EFI system of the Delphi system has more parts and sensors to break than the MM (throttle-position sensor to read engine load) system. The MM system is a bit trickier to set cold idle, but the Delphi ECM can have throttle response and heat issues. Each has an advantage, and a disadvantage. My MM has been trouble free through stock, Stage II, and Stage III+. Going EFI was the right decision for me. I know several other riders with these EFIS who also have no issues. I would guess that the adaptability of the Delphi ECM system to throttle-by-wire and closed-loop EFI (Federally mandated equipment to retain mfg. license) is the reason for the change as ever-tightening emission rules require new EFI systems to retain its EPA license to manufacture motorcycles by HD.
