Default Electric/speedometer/turn signals

Last week going through the Big Horn Mountains on the way to the Beartooth Rally with my son, my speedometer quit working. A short time later we noticed that my turn signals were not self canceling. Luckily I could let my son ride ahead as I had not idea what speed I was riding.

I ride a 2002 Heritage Springer, carb model.

Speedometer - fuses are okay; when you turn the ignition on the needle gives a little jump and the odometer and trip meter come up but they don't turn over.

Signals - work but don't self cancel.

Are these 2 problems related?

Most important - what do I need to do to fix the problems???

Turn signals may require a new flasher unit to self cancel. As far as the speedo, I believe you need to pull the sensor out and clean it. If that doesn't do it an new one will. Fairly cheap about $20.00

Had that happen twice on my 02 FXST, plus it wouldn't idle when that happened. It was the speed sensor both times. Tried cleaning it but that never helped, had to replace the sensor. About $75 at my dealer. But that's on an EFI bike...
The flashers self cancel based on input from the bank sensor and by time/distance traveled. But if the speed sensor is out the bike doesn't know that it's traveling.... so no self canceling.

Thanks Guys!! Will pull the sensor (assuming that the repair/service manual will tell me where it is) and clean it. If that doesn't work; will replace.

Well, I pulled the sensor last night, after I figured out that it is called a Vehicle Speed Sensor and not a Speedometer Sensor; cleaned it off and put it back. Went for a ride and still no speedometer/odometer readings. E-mailed the dealer this morning and ordered a new sensor. Thanks to 'sleepneagle' and 'Von Erik' for the assist.
