Help me out: Intermittent Power Loss While Cruising!!!
I posted this in the fuel section, but it could be electrical. But it doesn't seem like it. But then, again... electrical never ceases to confound me.
I ride a '87 Heritage which was rebuilt in 2001.
For the past 2 or 3 months, I've had a weird thing pop up when I'm cruising on the freeway.
If I am going 70 -75 mph, every once in a while, I'll get a drop in power, like I'm running out of gas. It will feel as if I'm hitting my brake for a second, then power will come back. Sometimes it will drop, then come back, drop and come back, every second or two. This will last anywhere from 10 to 30 seconds, then I'm back running like normal. In another 5 miles, it may happen again for a few seconds, but I ride it through, and it may not happen again for another 30 miles.
A buddy tested for 70 miles a couple days back and it didn't happen at all.
It doesn't happen on the street or when there's freeway traffic... just when I'm cruising.
I thought it was rust or dirt in the tank, and I had them cleaned, and installed an inline fuel filter. It still happens.
I tried using only expensive gas, and it still happens.
I've had it looked at in two H-D dealerships, and they can't figure out the problem, as the techs will only ride it around for 10 minutes max, and if it doesn't happen, they can't dianose it.
I still think it would be a fuel problem, but it's gone up hills at 70 mph just fine, and gotten up to 90 mph, and it runs fine (except for parts threatening to rattle off, of course).
Anybody had this happen, or have any ideas?

RE: Help me out: Intermittent Power Loss While Cruising!!!
I have an '05 Road Glide, and the same thing happened to me this past weekend. I was riding all day fine, until my group got gas in Flagstaff, AZ. Then, after cruising for about 30 minutes, at about 80mph, my bike started losing power for no reason. I finally nursed it home, and thought it was bad gasoline.
I took it to the dealership this past Monday, and they couldn't duplicate it either. They rode it for more than ten minutes and the bike never acted up. Weird!
So, I will be riding mine more and see if this problem comes back.
In your situation, I'm assuming your bike is carbureted. If you find out anything, please let me know as well.
Thanks,
Kahuna

RE: Help me out: Intermittent Power Loss While Cruising!!!
I don't know if this is going to fix your problem, but I have an "86" and mine had an exposed wire ,in the wiring harness on the down tube behind the rear cylinder, intermittently grounding out the primary wire to the coil. Your trouble sounds just like mine was. I'd check for a exposed wire for the ignition system shorting out somewhere. Intermittent troubles suck! Can't fix something thats not broke!

Sounds like a similar problem I've been chasing for almost 2 years. At about 3000rpm, it will start to sputter like I'm running out of fuel, then run fine, then sputters and so on. Runs fine above & below 3000 rpm. Pulled injectors and head them serviced. It ran great for about 3 months and now has started to do it all over again. I ride an "01 FLHRCI with M & M injectors. Back to scratchin' my head.
